The name Gio Ponti is legendary in the annals of mid century design history. Ponti was a Leonardo da Vinci of the design world and his lamps are a rarity in the furnishings marketplace. He did a few designs for Fontana Arte for the Hotel. Ponti lamps are so rare they end up fetching sizable sums when one does hit the marketplace. Here is one of Ponti’s rare designs for Laurel Lamp Co. Laurel contracted out with Italian designers Maurizio Tempestini & Gio Ponti to provide Italian designs to complement their inventory of Danish Modern styled lighting. Gio Ponti designed this for the Laurel Lamp company from his studio in Milan. “L’illuminazione elegante” was elegant illumination for high end lighting customers. Laurel Lamp had established the patronage of loyal buyers from Beverly Hills to Manhattan which loved the new “modern” European designers! This lamp features custom metal oversize metal cone shades with solid metal turn handles enameled in creamy white! These were custom heavy cast pieces and not used on any other Laurel Lamp outside this series of lamps which included a desk lamp, 3-light floor lamp and a tension pole lamp. All are extremely rare and highly coveted pieces. Few were made and even fewer have survived. In very fine condition. Brass still gleams like Midas touched it. Light age wear to the finish of the shades, arms and base. Works perfectly with a switch on the base and each shade switches off or on by turning the enameled handle. The style here is absolutely incredible and this lamp has functionality, grace and eye-popping mid century design. A spectacular addition to your NY penthouse, Beverly Hills estate or UK summer home!
