The first mold casts the incredible shapes and textures and then it is cast again – this time in a mold which applies some copper and brass to the finishes of many of the sculpted forms! THE FAMOUS FLOATING CLOCK! MID-CENTURY ATOMIC AGE CROSLEY CLOCK-RADIO! SUPERB MID CENTURY “FLOATING” STYLE! 10″ Wide By 6″ Deep. THE FINEST EXAMPLE IN THE WORLD! (1 9 5 3) The Crosley designers knocked it out of the park with this clock radio design. Crosley started making radios in the twenties and was one of the few manufacturers to survive the Great Depression – building radios, then cars and appliances. As time passed, and wherewithal grew, Crosley was able to hire the best designers. Being independently owned gave him an edge on the mass produced competition – who often played it safe, design wise, for investors. This radio employs every design element and trade secret in the book! The trendy floating butterfly legs elevate the clock radio off the surface for a futuristic appeal! This design is the very definition of symmetry – even the second hand is balanced – allowing for the only clock in the world where the second hand reading is interpretive! The shape of the radio employs the “golden mean” which is an ancient design measurement rooted in nature as the perfect proportion. This was used by the designers of the Parthenon and throughout history by the most knowledgeable and skilled artisans. The clock face features a “sunburst” motif – which had just started to trend in the fifties! Every facet of the design was light years ahead of the competition. The clock was both elegant but radically modern for the time period. It bridged the “old world” with its leatherette wrapping and brushed brass fittings with the mid century modern movement of weightlessness, minimalism and efficiency. Radio and clock both work! The leatherette is still soft and in excellent condition! The brass and clock face are in very good shape – still lustrous and sharp! The vacuum tube powered radio has a rich sound for such a compact design. Knobs on the side permit adjustment of tuning and volume. Knob features the “civil defense” symbols which were used during the cold war for people to turn to in case of attack or emergency.
