Sit back and let me tell you a tale of the high seas. The year was 1957 and it was a stormy all over the Gulf of Mexico. A man who loved the sea like his own children had retired from sailing as a fisherman and was now spending his days painting. He loved ships since he was a young boy. His father was a fisherman before him. He sat on his father’s lap as he heard stories of pirates and brigands roaming the seas and looting ships. The men knew they might be doomed but the captain kept his wits and ordered the crew to reverse course and make a run for it. They had only a matter of perhaps ten minutes before the ships would overtake them. But the captain was a very smart man. He had read about Rome and the Roman army. He had remembered how the Romans would feign flight so that the pursuing army would chase them and break formation. Only to be slaughtered by the Romans. The heavy cannons were mounted port and starboard. They first thought he had taken leave of his senses, but then they understood and obeyed. With the first blast a 4 foot hole had been blasted through the wood. Shouted the captain with determination. Without losing any speed to turn and fight they kept running – while fighting. But one shot got lucky! The crew cheered as they watched the vessel’s bow sunk under the waves and the pirates jumped overboard. He worked often on velvet and on this occasion he chose aqua velvet. He loved this painting and put his heart and soul into each stroke of his brush. The fisherman’s son lived in another land, in a big city and far from the sea. Now the tale has changed hands again. It’s breathtaking and conveys the excitement and adventure of the high seas! Even the frame is a great hand carved work of art! Some pin holes in the velvet right next to the frame at the top. Here is a wonderful work that captures a still life in a surreal fashion. Surrealism was an important part of the new artistic expression and was often considered’more real’ than realism. Surrealism was supposed to reveal the unobjective truths lurking beneath things, which viewers could peruse and take away with them. A still life was no longer just a still life. It was a statement. A surrealist still life might have a million meanings. It could be mocking conformity or illustrating how the mundane is really extraordinary. Perhaps the most magical thing about many mid century art works is that the artists were incorporating philosophy and thought into the art in a much stronger manner than ever before in history. The art is “self conscious of a higher purpose” and this original work captures this self consciousness in an almost iconic manner! Biomorphic shapes and primary colors bedazzle the observer and this surrealist still life has pleasing symmetry, color and form. This is an original painting, not a print, by Palm Springs artist Clee Sobieski. The gallery-wrapped canvas measures 11×14″ with a depth of 7/8″ and is painted on all sides (see pictures) making it ready to hang and enjoy without the need of a frame. The painting is sealed with a polymer varnish with UVLS (UltraViolet Light Stabilizers). It is signed by the artist on the lower right.
