Barkcloth Midcentury Atomic Large Curtains. These are a fantastic pair of vintage curtains which I bought and restored about ten years ago. They were in a poor state. I washed them and darned and repaired many holes. I had them professionally relined with off white cotton. There are still a few flaws, ragged edge at part of the bottom and a few tiny holes. But generally, they are in very good condition for their age and present very well. In the photos, it is the sun shining creating a lighter patch, but they are only a little colour faded at the edges. It is unusual to find such a large pair of curtains in usable condition. The original curtain is beautiful and has a thin tape to the top. Can defiantly be made into a dress. Measures 172 x 106 cm. I love love love this curtain. I have another listed so you could have a pair. Condition is “Used” may have a little discolouration, this can be expected with 70 year old curtains. Today, what is commonly called barkcloth is a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric, so named because it has a rough surface like that of tree bark. This barkcloth is usually made of densely woven cotton fibers. Historically, the fabric has been used in home furnishings, such as curtains, drapery, upholstery, and slipcovers. It is often associated with 1940s through 1960s home fashions, particularly in tropical, abstract, “atomic” and “boomerang” prints, the last two themes being expressed by images of atoms with electrons whirling, and by the boomerang shape which was very popular in mid-century cocktail tables and fabrics.
